Live but Unarmed Mine Discovered

A city sanitation crew clearing a storm drain in preparation for the rainy season discovered a live but unarmed Claymore anti-personnel mine Wednesday, police said.

A bomb disposal unit from the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, with assistance from the sheriff’s bomb squad, removed the mine without incident about 3 p.m., Irvine Police Lt. Al Muir said.

Muir said police had no idea how long the mine had been in the storm drain at Turtle Rock Drive and Sycamore Creek or how it got there.

A model still being used by the Marines, the mine was live but did not have the electrical impulse device necessary to detonate it, Muir said.
