* * John Michael Montgomery, “Kickin’ It Up,” Atlantic. Montgomery’s sophomore effort fails to expand on promising aspects of last year’s hit debut, “Life’s a Dance.” Outside of the first track--”Be My Baby Tonight,” whose tongue-twisting chorus virtually screams hit --there’s nary a memorable lyric. When he’s not echoing Garth, what little character his voice possesses sounds like Elton John goes to Nashville.
