Nation IN BRIEF : OHIO : Hyatt Begins Bid for Metzenbaum’s Seat
Democrat Joel Hyatt began his U.S. Senate campaign, undaunted that he could be hurt by the movie “Philadelphia,” which has brought attention to his firm’s firing of an AIDS-infected lawyer. Hyatt is seeking to replace his father-in-law, Democratic Sen. Howard M. Metzenbaum, who is retiring. The film was inspired by dozens of cases, including one involving Hyatt’s firm, the film’s publicist said. Clarence Cain, a senior attorney with Hyatt Legal Services in Philadelphia, was fired seven years ago after he learned he had AIDS. He sued for discrimination and won $157,000 in 1990. He died two months later.
