Mutual Fund Guidelines Urged for Banks: Six banking organizations are asking member institutions to tell customers: If you buy mutual funds, understand that they are not guaranteed by the federal government. The message is included in a series of guidelines that the trade groups hope commercial banks will adopt when selling the popular mutual funds. Surveys show that many people who buy mutual funds from banks are unaware that they could lose their money. Unlike bank deposits, fund investments are not guaranteed by the government.
