A Bigger Season Ahead for OCPS : Music: The Philharmonic Society will offer six more events and two more series in ‘94-’95 than it did in ‘93-’94, including a wider range of classical works.

The Orange County Philharmonic Society is in expansion mode for next season after reducing its offerings in 1993-94 because of budget and scheduling problems.

This season, there are eight orchestra concerts at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, five other events at the center by diverse groups, and six programs being presented jointly with the Laguna Chamber Music Society at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Next season again will see eight orchestra concerts at the center but only three additional programs there by diverse groups.

However, there will be 13 concerts at the Irvine Barclay, and a Mexican Christmas program at the UC Irvine Bren Center on a date to be announced. Dean Corey, announcing his first season since taking over as OCPS executive director in August, has added two new series at the IBT, one of programs by the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and another of programs by chamber ensembles. Altogether there will be 25 events, as opposed to the 19 this year.

And it’s not just be a matter of quantity. The programs next season will span a wider range of classical music, from the medieval to the contemporary. The Irvine Barclay will see not just chamber groups but other types of programs including dance.

Anonymous 4, a group of four women, will sing medieval chants and polyphony at the Barclay on Feb. 6. The Kronos Quartet will be there May 11. And the minimalist music of John Adams and Philip Glass will be played there by the London Chamber Orchestra on Oct. 28.

One can be sure that when Peter Maxwell Davies leads the BBC Orchestra of Manchester at OCPAC on March 20, he will conduct some of his own bracing and abrasive music. And Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic in his own “Mimo II” for oboe and orchestra at the center on April 22.

Additional international orchestras will include the Kirov Orchestra of St. Petersburg (Oct. 10), the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Budapest (Nov. 12) and the Vienna Symphony (Nov. 14). The United States will be further represented by the Utah Symphony (Feb. 13) and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, conducted by Andre Previn (April 11).

Missing from the Society’s schedule at the center will be all but one of the ethnic and world music and dance programs that sparked a controversy last season (see accompanying story).

Teatro de Danza Espanola will open the OCPS season at the center on Oct. 6. Two other ethnic groups--the Mariachi los Camperos de Nati Cano and the National Ballet du Senegal--will perform in Irvine, at the Bren Center and the IBT respectively.
