President Clinton has nominated Vice Adm. Henry Chiles Jr. for appointment as commander-in-chief of the U.S. Strategic Command and promotion to admiral, the Pentagon announced Thursday.

If confirmed by the Senate, Chiles, 56, would become the first admiral to head the new command, which brings all Air Force and Navy nuclear weapons under the command of a single unit.
