Dutch Zoo Goes Ape Over Ape Art
After they gaze at great works by Rembrandt and Van Gogh, art lovers can take in pieces by lesser known artists at the local zoo.
The big names in Dutch art may have spent hours of painstaking labor over their canvases, but most of the 30 pictures on display at the Artis Zoo took just seconds to execute. The exhibition is dedicated exclusively to ape art.
“They use pencils, charcoal and even water colors,” zoo spokeswoman Henrietta Plantenga said Friday.
The primate pictures, some dating back to the 1950s, were created by orangutans and chimpanzees from all over Europe and collected by the Dutch-based Staring at Scribbles Foundation.
