SIMI VALLEY : Students to Debate Birth-Control Issue

Share

Students have organized a debate on a topic that has divided Simi Valley parents: whether school officials should add birth-control information to the sex-education curriculum.

The Assn. for Student Empowerment organized the debate between ASE member Nitin Nayar, a senior at Royal High School, and Tim Amey, a Simi Valley High School senior.

“I am pushing for an abstinence-based program, one which sets abstinence as the standard, because statistics prove that teaching life skills has better results than teaching birth control,” Tim said.

The public is invited to listen to Wednesday’s proceedings, which will include opening statements and rebuttals on both sides. Nitin, one of the school board’s non-voting student members, will argue in favor of discussing birth control along with abstinence.

“My position is for a comprehensive sex-education curriculum, one that is reality-based and provides sufficient information for teen-agers and treats them like mature adults, which is what high school is all about,” Nitin said.

The debate will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Berylwood Elementary School.
