A. Alexandrov; Led Soviet Reactor Program

Anatoly Alexandrov, who led the Soviet effort to develop nuclear reactors such as the one that exploded at Chernobyl in 1986, died Thursday. He was 90.

Alexandrov was also instrumental in developing the Soviet nuclear-powered fleet.

He was head of the Kurchatov Institute, Russia’s primary nuclear research center, and was president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences for 12 years.
