CU Bancorp, the Encino-based parent of California United Bank, said its chairman, Jon P. Goodman, resigned as expected after helping to engineer the bank’s turnaround.

Paul W. Glass, 47, a CU Bancorp director, was named the bank holding company’s new chairman. A certified public accountant, Glass is a principal in the Encino accounting firm of Glass & Rosen.

Goodman, a business professor at USC, also resigned as a director of both CU Bancorp and California United. Her replacement on those boards will be announced later, a CU Bancorp spokesman said. In a statement, Goodman said she would return to USC, where she directs the business school’s entrepreneurial program.

CU Bancorp named Goodman chairman 13 months ago in a management shake-up related to the bank’s mounting real estate losses. The company has since refocused its attention on mid-sized business clients while reducing its non-performing real estate loans, and recently reported its fourth straight quarterly profit.

Stephen G. Carpenter, CU Bancorp’s president and chief executive officer, will also take on Goodman’s duties as chairman of California United. David I. Rainer, California United’s chief operating officer, will also become president of California United, succeeding Carpenter.
