LOS ANGELES : School Board to Fight Anti-Immigrant Moves

Share

The Los Angeles Board of Education voted to oppose any effort by the state Legislature to deny free public education to children who are illegal immigrants.

Board President Leticia Quezada said any move to remove those children from public schools would be “incredibly abhorrent.”

The board also honored the late farm labor leader Cesar Chavez by calling on schools to study his life and work between his March 31 birthday and April 23, the anniversary of his death last year.

Also on Monday, the board’s budget director said Gov. Pete Wilson’s proposed budget for next fiscal year does not cut funding but provides nothing new for inflation or for education reforms in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Henry Jones said it is not known how much quake damage expense will have to be borne by the district.
