TOKYO : Hosokawa to Summit

Share

Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa heads to Washington for a Friday summit meeting focused on U.S.-Japanese trade issues, particularly proposed steps to further open Japan’s markets to foreign goods and services.

American and Japanese negotiators are trying to reach a set of trade agreements in four priority areas before the summit: automobiles and auto parts, insurance, telecommunications and medical equipment. Talks have been virtually deadlocked by disagreement on whether to include numerical goals to measure progress in expanding market access.

U.S. officials say difficult negotiations are likely to continue up to the last possible moment but add that there is a possibility of success.
