Fewer Layoffs Planned by HomeFed: Great Western Bank said it is laying off fewer HomeFed Bank branch employees than originally announced. Great Western, which bought 119 former HomeFed branches in Southern California on Dec. 3, is offering jobs to 839 branch employees, or 88% of the branch office work force. Initially, the thrift had said it might offer to hire perhaps half those HomeFed employees. Normal attrition and increased workload created the need for more workers, Great Western said, but most of HomeFed’s 630 administrative employees will still lose their jobs.
