Norse in the Southland

The end of the Winter Games will not signal an end to the celebration of things Norwegian. April 16 is the date set for California Lutheran University’s annual Scandinavian festival, which will feature Norwegian foods along with dishes from other parts of Scandinavia. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the California Lutheran campus in Thousand Oaks. Call the university at (805) 493-3151 for further information.

Edvard Grieg Lodge of Glendale will hold a potato lefse- making party March 12 and a torsk and meatball dinner March 26. Lefse is a round flatbread that looks like a flour tortilla. Torsk is Icelandic cod. At the lodge dinner, it will be served with steamed potatoes, a green vegetable, coleslaw, pickled beets, pickled cucumbers and tapioca or rice pudding with raspberry sauce. This event is open to non-members. For information, write to Edvard Grieg Lodge, Sons of Norway, American Legion Hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave., La Crescenta, Calif. 91214.

Norway’s National Day will be celebrated May 17. And on Oct. 8 in Santa Monica, Norwegians will have still another opportunity to show off their culinary heritage. They’ll serve foods such as heart-shaped waffles, meatballs and lefse at the annual Scandinavian festival sponsored by the American Scandinavian Foundation of Los Angeles.
