Presidents’ Raise

* I am a high school senior, and with my parents I am facing the difficult task of financing my college education.
Private schools are now so costly that I am looking toward the public University of California system for my higher education.
But, even as you read this letter, Gov. Pete Wilson is discussing raising tuition at the UC and Cal State systems. Even California’s community colleges will feel the pressure.
That is why I must respond to your article “Cal State Panel OKs 8.6% Raise for Presidents,” (Jan. 26).
How can they justify raising their own salaries over $10,000 a year when hundreds of college students will need to claw and scratch their way to earn enough money to pay for college?
Anyone who makes over $100,000 a year is financially secure, and during a recession should not make their lives more luxurious at the expense of others. Even my own parents’ combined salary is only $70,000 a year.
(UC trustee) William Hauck was right when he warned this act could “send the wrong message.” It does!
