Gunfire shattered the calm outside a Vietnamese restaurant Wednesday afternoon, leaving one youth wounded in the foot and showering restaurant patrons with shattered window glass, police said.

The shooting, which authorities said appeared to be gang-related, took place in the parking lot of a strip mall in the 14500 block of Brookhurst Street, on the border with Garden Grove. Four months ago, a similar incident took place about a 1 1/2 miles away in a parking lot outside a coffee shop.

Witnesses told police that Wednesday’s incident began about 2:30 p.m. inside the Pho 86 restaurant, when two young males at a table were confronted by three other young males who walked into the restaurant. An argument ensued, and all five of those involved moved to the parking lot. Someone in the second group pulled a handgun and fired several times, police said, hitting one man in the lower leg and missing the other, who ducked behind a parked car. The three assailants, including a gunman wearing a dark jacket, fled in a mid-1980s Toyota Supra, according to Lt. Richard Main.

The wounded youth, whom police have not identified, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment. Several of the shots shattered windows of the restaurant, but no customers were injured.

In late October in Fountain Valley, three young men were shot--one fatally--while standing in front of the Cafe Gia Hoi. The restaurant, near Edinger Avenue and Magnolia Street, is across the street from Westminster.

The three men were shot from a car as they tried to escape on foot. Tu Anh Nguyen, 19, was shot in the head and later died. The other two victims, in their early 20s, were wounded in the foot and neck.

A 27-year-old Garden Grove man, Phuong Phuc Le, was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

“We’ve had a number of incidents right in that area,” Main said.
