Gov. Pete Wilson has filed documents declaring his intent to run for reelection, meeting Wednesday’s state deadline to file with the secretary of state.

Among those also filing for governor were Democrats John Garamendi, the state insurance commissioner, state Treasurer Kathleen Brown and state Sen. Tom Hayden.

The declarations were incomplete, because potential candidates for a variety of state offices could declare their intent to run with the secretary of state’s office in Sacramento, as Wilson did, or make a similar filing at the county level.

In addition, there is no incumbent running in six statewide races, so the filing deadline for those offices is not until Monday. Those six offices are lieutenant governor, controller, treasurer, secretary of state, superintendent of public instruction and insurance commissioner.

Caren Daniels-Meade, spokeswoman for Secretary of State March Fong Eu, said a complete list of candidates will not be available until next week.

Under state law, candidates must declare their intent to seek office. They have 30 days after that deadline to officially file as candidates for office.

Others who declared their intent to run were Assemblyman Stan Statham (R-Oak Run), who filed for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor to replace Democrat Leo T. McCarthy, who is retiring. Filing on the Democratic side was Controller Gray Davis.

In a suprise move, state Sen. David A. Roberti (D-Van Nuys) filed for both state treasurer and a seat on the Board of Equalization, Daniels said. This buys Roberti more time to make up his mind which office to run for.

Former State Democratic Party Chairman Phil Angelides also filed papers to run for treasurer.

Chief Deputy Secretary of State Tony Miller filed to run for the Democratic nomination to replace his boss, who has been nominated by President Clinton to be U.S. ambassador to Micronesia. Assemblyman Bill Jones (R-Fresno) and Assemblywoman Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) also filed for the office.

Assemblyman Rusty Areias (D-San Jose) filed for the Democratic nomination for state controller to replace incumbent Democrat Gray Davis, who is expected to run for lieutenant governor. Former GOP Assemblyman Tom McClintock of Thousand Oaks also filed for the post, as did Democrat Kathleen Connell.

State Sen. Art Torres (D-Los Angeles) filed to seek office as state insurance commissioner, the job Garamendi is leaving. So did Republican Jim Conran.

Gov. Wilson’s education adviser, Maureen DiMarco, filed for the nonpartisan office of state superintendent of public instruction. Assemblywoman Delaine Eastin (D-Fremont), the chairwoman of the Assembly Education Committee, also filed for the state schools post.

In the attorney general’s race, incumbent Republican Dan Lungren filed for reelection.
