The Angels invited minor league left-hander Andrew Lorraine to spring training.

Lorraine, a fourth-round draft choice from Stanford last summer, was 1-2 with a 2.51 ERA, yielding 20 hits and striking out 16 in 28 innings for La Guaira of the Venezuelan League in winter baseball. He was 4-1 with a 1.29 ERA in six starts in Class A Boise last summer.

Lorraine is among 13 non-roster players invited to spring training, including eight pitchers.

Meanwhile, Bob Fontaine was promoted from scouting director to Angel assistant vice president for scouting and player personnel.

Sean Elliott, the Detroit Piston forward whose kidney ailment scuttled a trade to the Houston Rockets, said he will take an indefinite leave of absence.

Elliott’s agent, Burt Kinerk, said doctors in Houston and Detroit are at odds as to whether Elliott, 26, can play while being treated.
