Hill Finds Old Touch on New Course
Past champion Mike Hill was disappointed when the Suncoast Classic moved from the site of his first Senior PGA Tour victory, but he might feel a bit differently after Saturday’s performance.
Hill shot a second-round 64 for a two-day nine-under-par 133 at the Tournament Players Club of Tampa Bay. That gave him a two-stroke lead over Orville Moody, who shot 69.
“I don’t think one round of shooting 64 will make you fall in love with a golf course or a place,” Hill said. “I have a lot of fond memories from Tampa Palms. . . . And while I’ve never done very well here, who knows? My whole outlook might change.”
George Archer and Raymond Floyd are three strokes behind, Lee Trevino and Simon Hobday four back.
After a one-under-par front nine, Hill sailed through the back with four birdies and an eagle. He sank an 18-foot birdie putt on No. 10, 12-footers for birdies on Nos. 12 and 13, chipped in from 20 feet for eagle on 14 and dropped a 12-foot putt on 16.
