Defending Olympic champion George Hackl of Germany drew the No. 1 starting assignment for today’s first of two heats in men’s luge.

Wendel Suckow and Duncan Kennedy of the United States will start 10th and 12th, respectively, with the top tier of 12 reversing order for the second heat. The final two heats will be held Monday.

Hackl, who was second in the 1988 Olympics, had an erratic World Cup campaign, finishing third behind Markus Prock of Austria and Kennedy. He also lost the European championship to Prock on his home track in Konigssee, Germany.
