Skier Shannon Nobis raised a lot of eyebrows with her 10th-place finish in the women’s super-giant slalom.

Some were surprised that the 21-year-old from Park City even had made the U.S. Alpine team. She was supposed to be one of America’s hopes for 1998.

“Ever since I was young, because I did so well, they always said, ‘You always have next year, take it slow,’ ” Nobis said. “The thing is, people make it really young in skiing, too. Enough of that. You have to go out and say, ‘I can do it.’ You ski with those people every day, the top five in the world, you have to realize you can do it. It’s not a matter of being older or experienced.”

Nobis’ brother, Jeremy, is on the U.S. men’s team and will race in giant slalom next week.

The super-G silver medal won by Svetlana Gladischeva was the first for Russia in Alpine skiing. Gladischeva has been on the national team for six years.

She was the 35th skier down the course and nearly snatched the gold from American Diann Roffe-Steinrotter, losing by .29 of a second.

After her run, Gladischeva said she looked at the timing board and said, “This cannot be true. This cannot be true.”
