Showing Hospitality: Rich Ottaviano, AST Research Corp. senior vice president, used UC Irvine’s annual executive survey briefing Tuesday to lodge a complaint about many civic and business organizations in California. Too many of them call businesses only “for a donation, a cocktail party or a golf tournament,” he said.

In contrast, out-of-state chambers of commerce actively lobby California business executives to move to their locales. “Most states and cities are acting like Singapore did five years ago,” Ottaviano said.

That means greeting out-of-town business executives at the airport, scurrying to find answers to their questions and generally serving as “a professional business organization,” Ottaviano said.
