Los Angeles County officials have identified the five top candidates for the job of county public defender, left vacant last fall by the retirement of veteran Los Angeles County Public Defender Wilbur Littlefield.

The five are Ventura County Public Defender Kenneth I. Clayman, 52, a former trial deputy and division chief in the Los Angeles County public defender’s office; Michael P. Judge, a veteran public defender in that office; David Meyer, 50, the acting public defender in that office; Mark E. Overland, 53, a former deputy public defender in that office and now partner in the Overland & Gits law firm in Santa Monica, and Fresno County Public Defender Jose R. Villarreal, 49.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will interview each of the five, said Shigeki Kikkawa, executive recruiter for the county chief administrative officer.
