Two-time gold medalist Katarina Witt of Germany arrived in Norway and promptly griped about the coverage American figure skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan are getting.

“I was shocked the first time I heard of the case,” Witt said. “I don’t think it’s fair to the other athletes that this case has received so much publicity. There are more important things in the world.”

Namely, herself?

Said Witt: “I know that I am not good enough to win an Olympic medal, and that is not why I came here. My goal at these Games is to do my best and show that I am good.”

An Olympic “torch” ice cream cone is popular here. In the Olympic village, where the cones come compliments of the house, a cooler holding 1,000 is refilled twice a day.

“But isn’t it too cold to eat ice cream?” someone asked Georg Breivik, an ice cream distributor for the Olympic region.

“Cold?” Breivik replied in disbelief. “Not at all. This is indoors!”
