Canadian Coach Tom Renney, who broke up the high-scoring Paul Kariya-Petr Nedved-Chris Kontos line occasionally in the tournament’s first four games, did not use them as a unit at all Monday. Kariya, who spent most of the game at left wing with Brian Savage and Dwayne Norris, didn’t mind the change.

“It’s helped all of us, especially today, because we didn’t have just the one line,” he said. “When we rotate our lines, it keeps everyone on the other team off balance.”

He also rejected the judgment by Pierre Gauthier, Mighty Duck assistant general manager, that he has been pressing to score here.

“International tournaments are not like North America,” he said. “The play is a lot different. The team’s winning, and I felt I’ve been playing pretty well and that I can pick it up and play better in the medal round. I’m handling the puck more and I’m more into the flow of the game and creating more opportunities.”
