Gift to Help Three Youth Projects

Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce Champions Foundation has passed along a $117,500 donation from Noboru Watanabe, president of the Riviera Country Club, to three nonprofit organizations: L.A.’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) received $62,500 for a new after-school program at Napa Street Elementary School in Northridge; Heart of Los Angeles, a facility in the mid-Wilshire area for at-risk youth, has $35,000 for renovation of a theater, dance studio, arts workshop and athletic facilities; $20,000 went to Educational Resource and Services Center Inc. (ERAS) for the Farm Store, a vocational training project for youth.

Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles raised $115,000 at its Feb. 10 Bachelor Auction at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. More than 600 women bid for dates with 35 bachelors, including Fox TV news anchor John Beard and actors Kelsey Grammer and Jon Voight.

Cancer Detection Center of the Cancer Prevention Society has received a $10,000 grant from the Weingart Foundation to be used to offer mammograms at a reduced rate to low-income women.

Academic Booster Club of Westchester High School received a $5,000 donation from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation to purchase computers.
