Comedian Garrett Morris was listed in serious but stable condition Friday at Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital in Inglewood, where he had undergone surgery for gunshot wounds.

A bullet remained lodged near his spinal cord and will probably be surgically removed soon, although Morris is not paralyzed, Dr. Randy Hawkins told reporters.

“He’s fortunate he did not have more severe injuries,” said Hawkins, who described the actor as awake and alert.

The bullet pierced Morris’ lower left arm and continued into his abdomen, damaging his small and large intestine, aorta and stomach before lodging in the spinal canal, Hawkins said. He characterized the arm wound as probably minor and the abdominal injuries as serious.

Morris’ wife, Freda, briefly addressed reporters at the hospital news conference to thank her husband’s supporters for their prayers.

“My husband is the most fortunate person,” Morris said. “This is an unfortunate thing that can happen anywhere. I’m just sorry that it happened at all.”
