NEWPORT BEACH : 5,000 Expected for Annual Spirit Run
The streets of Fashion Island will be crowded with 5,000 runners and walkers Sunday in support of local schools.
Sunday is the 11th annual Spirit Run to raise money for Andersen, Harbor View and Lincoln elementary schools.
“This started out as just a little race among the three elementary schools over there,” said Deborah Karl, a race volunteer and organizer. “It has grown to where we are attracting big-name racers.”
Karl said participants run or walk, some with babies in strollers or with dogs.
Last year’s race raised $75,000 for the three elementary schools. Karl said the money is used throughout the school year to help pay for various projects.
The 10-kilometer race is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Edwards Theater in Fashion Island.
Participants can pay $16 to register for the race on Sunday morning before it starts.
After the event is over, there will be a Spirit Day festival with clowns, musicians and food.
