Disneyland began laying off 60 administrative and support workers Monday, the second time in this decade that Magic Kingdom employees have been idled.

“It’s nothing that would impact the guest experience,” park spokesman Lindsay Schnebly said. “It is an attempt to streamline the operations of the resort.”

All of those laid off worked behind the scenes and were salaried, rather than hourly workers, Schnebly said. They represent less than 1% of the park’s 9,000 to 12,000 workers.

The theme park’s ride operators, sweepers, people who dress up as Disney characters and others who generally work with the public are paid by the hour and are not affected.

Though Disneyland’s attendance has been reported by trade journals to be stagnant recently, Schnebly said, the layoffs are more a factor of a general restructuring and reorganization similar to one in 1992, when the park cut about 30 employees from its payroll.

Schnebly said no further layoffs are expected.

Workers being idled will be offered unspecified benefits, Schnebly said, and will get help finding new jobs.

Judson C. Green, president of Disney’s theme park division, told a group of managers in the Anaheim park at the Jan. 27 meeting that the cuts are “part of doing business in the ‘90s” and will affect the company across the board.

Walt Disney World, Disney’s Florida resort, announced Friday that it will lay off 360 employees.

Financial difficulties at the Euro Disney theme park outside Paris has put pressure on the rest of the corporation. The park, of which the Disney Co. owns about half, lost more than $900 million for its latest fiscal year.
