Riley to Leave Hospital After Back Surgery

Share

Board of Supervisors Chairman Thomas F. Riley is scheduled to be released today from Hoag Hospital, where he has been recovering from spinal surgery performed last week, his chief of staff said Monday.

Riley, 81, who had lower back surgery Thursday to relieve pinched nerves, was up and about over the weekend with the assistance of a walker, aide Christie McDaniel said.

The surgery is the latest in a string of medical problems to beset Riley. In recent years, he has contended with quadruple bypass heart surgery, diabetes, asthma and bronchitis. The pinched nerves Riley had alleviated last week had been causing him intense leg pain.

An examination is scheduled for Monday to help Riley gauge how long his recovery will keep him out of his office. Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez will step into the chairman post during Riley’s absence.

McDaniel said that the retired Marine Corps general was itching to return to work.

“He’s already asked for staff to drop work by his home so he can get back to being busy,” McDaniel said. “It’s great news.”
