Roy Houston of Torrance has been appointed to the Kadner-Pitts chair of research in biological sciences at Loyola Marymount University. Houston, a marine biology professor, will continue research on the reproductive systems of sea snails. He will also begin a research project on green coral at the Loyola Marymount University Baja California biological station. *

The Auxiliary of San Pedro Peninsula Hospital recently honored volunteers who have more than two decades of service. Among those honored were Alma Zorotovich of San Pedro, Lois Corian of San Pedro, Betty Coulombe of Palos Verdes and Eleanor Caswell of Harbor City.

Patricia Patten of Palos Verdes Estates is the new president of the Sons of Norway Ulabrand Lodge in the South Bay. The organization preserves Norwegian culture in the United States through language, cooking, music, drama and traditions.

The Assn. for Retarded Citizens-South Bay recently elected officers for 1994. They are: John P. Kirk of Ranchos Palos Verdes, Mayor Brad Parton of Redondo Beach, Paul Flahive of Manhattan Beach and William Wiggins of Torrance.

Rancho Palos Verdes resident Pete F. Moore has been reappointed to the Los Angeles County Commission on Alcoholism. Moore is a manager with Kaiser International.

Lawndale City Clerk Neil K. Roth was designated a certified municipal clerk under an international certification program run by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. The program recognizes clerks who have specialized training in the field. Neil obtained certification after completing his degree in administration recently at San Diego State.

Rachelle Katz was named assistant dean of Loyola Marymount University’s College of Business Administration. She succeeds H. Daniel Stage, who is returning to teaching. Katz, a professor of finance, has chaired the finance and computer information systems department for nine years. She holds degrees from Stanford, University of Michigan and Purdue.

Rolling Hills Estates resident Randolph Westerfield has been named dean of the USC School of Business Administration. Westerfield, an expert in mergers and acquisitions, and investment management and analysis, is co-author of two books about corporate finance.

Father Allan Figueroa Deck, an associate professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University, was featured in a Discovery Channel documentary about the role of Spanish Catholic missions to Christianize, colonize and conquer the American West. “Rediscovering America: Mission” aired in late October.

The Volunteer Centers of California presented Manhattan Beach resident James Fucile with the Gloria Deukmejian Founder’s Award for outstanding volunteer service. For 10 years, Fucile has volunteered at the center, serving as president and board member.

The Sandpipers, a South Bay philanthropic organization, elected Joy Leeper as president. Leeper, a Hermosa Beach resident, also will serve on the board of directors. The Sandpipers aid local needy families, organizations and students.
