GM, UAW Reach Agreement to Avert Strike: The tentative accord between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers was over a three-year contract for a GM plant in Oklahoma City. Linda Smith, a secretary at UAW Local 1999, said agreement was reached about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. The union, which represents 4,500 workers at the plant, had set a 10 a.m. strike deadline. A union spokesman said the final bargaining session lasted 30 hours. Details of the agreement were not immediately available. The agreement averted what would have been the first strike in the 15-year history of the plant, where the Cutlass Ciera and the Buick Century are produced. Talks had been under way for eight months.
