Tonya Harding was assaulted in a city park near the apartment complex where she has been staying with friends, police said Friday.

Harding suffered scrapes and bruises and a sprained wrist in the attack, which occurred about 11 p.m. Thursday. Police said it is possible she was targeted.

Harding told investigators she was walking from her pickup truck through McMillan Park to the apartment complex when a man knocked her down from behind, police spokesman Mark Hyde said Friday.

The man then jumped on her back and a struggle ensued. The assailant, who didn’t say anything, fled when Harding set off a personal alarm, Hyde said.

She ran back to her friends’ apartment and called police.

Harding was treated for bruises on her knees and elbows and a sprained left wrist at a hospital, then released, Hyde said.

Harding placed eighth in Olympic figure skating. Her former husband, Jeff Gillooly, has pleaded guilty to arranging an attack on her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan. He implicated Harding in the scheme; she denies it. An investigation is ongoing.

Kerrigan recovered and won the silver medal.
