Buffett Buys 6 Million Shares of Salomon: Fulfilling an earlier pledge, investor Warren Buffett raised his stake in the New York-based investment banking firm to 19% from 14.3%. Salomon Bros. common shares closed up 50 cents at 49.625. Buffett held a 14.3% stake in Salomon since 1987, when companies he controls spent about $700 million to buy 700,000 shares of the company’s Series A cumulative convertible preferred stock.
