Fernando Vargas of Oxnard, a 16-year-old in his first appearance at U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships, upset defending 132-pound champion Abayomi Miller in a semifinal bout.

Vargas countered well off the ropes and scored a 29-23 victory. He will meet Terrence Cauthen of Philadelphia in Saturday’s final.

Lance Whitaker of Northridge advanced to the final of the over 201-pound division with a 40-21 victory over Ed Mahone of St. Louis.

Basketball

Three area players were on the South team that faced the North in the women’s junior college all-star game at Solano College.

Guards Karen Revelez and Edith Bradley of Oxnard and Terra Bruessel of Canyons played in the game won by the North, 93-84. Bradley made a three-point basket and Revelez had two points.

Ventura forward Julie Hardy, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Buena High, was selected to the all-state women’s team. Hardy averaged 20.5 points and finished second in scoring in the Western State Conference behind Rebekah Cunnan of Canyons (24.0).

The two freshmen were the most valuable players in their respective divisions, Hardy in the North and Cunnan in the South.

Cal State Northridge has scheduled its men’s basketball awards dinner March 23 at 6 p.m. at the University Club on campus.

The American Roundball Corp. has scheduled registration for its spring development league for boys and girls ages 7-12. Sign-ups are Sunday and again March 20 from 11 a.m. to noon at North Hollywood and Camarillo highs.

Golf

The 44th L.A. City Junior Golf Championship is scheduled for March 26-28 at Wilson, Harding and Roosevelt golf courses in Griffith Park.

Players, who must be under 18, must register by Wednesday. There will be 54 holes of stroke play for players aged 12-17 and 18 holes of stroke play for those 11 and under.

Allison Wilson of Grant High and Ted Oh of Torrance are the defending girls’ and boys’ champions.

Baseball

Birmingham High senior right-hander Steve Brown, the Braves’ ace pitcher, suffered an injury to his lower back last month and is not expected to return to competition for at least another week.

Brown, 3-5 with a 2.41 earned-run average and 52 strikeouts in 61 innings last year, is expected to play in the Braves’ Valley Pac-8 Conference opener March 17.
