COSTA MESA — David Ford’s “Too Good to Be True” will be given a staged reading at 7:30 p.m. Monday at South Coast Repertory, 655 Town Center Drive. The play, about employees of a national AIDS charity, won second prize last week in SCR’s California Playwrights Competition for unproduced scripts.
Ford, a director and performance artist, lives in Oakland and, according to SCR, has collaborated either as director or co-creator of a variety of productions in the Bay Area, including “Memory Tricks” with Marga Gomez, which won a Bay Area Critics Circle Award and was recently produced at the Public Theatre in New York, and “Looking for Black Women on the Radio” with Bill Talen.
The top winner of the SCR competition, “Green Icebergs” by Cecilia Fannon, will be given a reading at the theater May 2. Both readings will take place on the Mainstage. General admission is $7. (714) 957-4033.
