PLAY BALL: The big boys aren’t playing for real yet, but why wait for those well-paid, big egos before getting excited about our national pastime? Not when there’s some good action right in your own neighborhood . . . We’re talking Little League, of course, with games beginning today all over the Valley.

BIBLE IN JEOPARDY: We’ve already learned from school tests that our students don’t know as much as we had hoped. Now, we hear some adults aren’t doing much better, at least in regard to Christianity. A new survey shows that 65% of Americans don’t know what “John 3:16” signifies, and most can’t define “the Gospel.” . . . “We live in a biblically illiterate generation,” said a Chatsworth pastor. ROUND TWO: Apparently, state Sen. David A. Roberti wasn’t satisfied with just one nasty political fight. Roberti (above) formally announced Friday his bid for state treasurer, saying that if elected, he’ll use the office to finance California’s crime-fighting agenda and prison construction. . . . Roberti is also trying to survive a Valley recall effort. (B1)

ON TRACK: Is there a changing of the guard at Hart High in Santa Clarita? In November, Hart’s highly regarded cross-country team failed to make it to the state championships for the first time in five years. But its track squad, which had always played second fiddle to the cross-country team, is expected to do even better than usual in the section Division I meet in May. . . . Staff writer John Ortega previews the high school track season. (C15)

BAD ACTORS: First, Jack Nicholson was accused of whacking a car with a golf club in Studio City. Now, James Caan has allegedly pulled a gun during a dispute in North Hollywood. (B9) . . . Still, celebrity crime is not a shocking development. In the last few years, former child actors Todd Bridges and Adam Rich have gotten into trouble around here with the law.
