* Starr’s article calls the police and the librarians’ unions “irresponsible trade unionism.” As a union member for almost my whole working life, I am offended by his attack on these unions, even so far as to suggest that these people should lose their jobs, while ignoring the role management plays.

According to him it’s all the unions’ fault and their members’ fault. Had Starr looked around, I am quite sure he would have seen the management side refusing to bargain or negotiate with anything close to a meaningful offer. When the management side shows a lack of interest in resolving the issues, what other choice is there than to do something outrageous, as these unions have done? I suspect they had no choice. Now let us hope they can be recognized as full partners in the negotiations and their respective issues addressed.
