‘Chief’ Expands Hillside Home
LANE SMITH, who plays Daily Planet editor Perry White in the ABC sitcom “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” has just completed a major expansion of his hillside home in Studio City.
Smith, who will play the general manager of the Yankees in the upcoming Albert Brooks film “The Scout,” played a coach in “The Mighty Ducks,” the prosecutor in “My Cousin Vinny” and a powerful politician in “The Distinguished Gentleman.”
A New York-based actor for 18 years, Smith has appeared in a number of Broadway plays but is probably best known for his role as Richard Nixon in the 1989 ABC miniseries “The Final Days.”
“I’ve been in this house for eight years now,” he said. “From the minute I first walked through the front door, I loved the place with its high ceiling, pitched roof and window looking out at a magnificent, Valley view.”
The window went all the way across his 25-foot-wide living room. “And the room is 30-feet high, so I had large expanses of glass.” But his view was blocked when two “humongous houses,” as Smith describes them, were built below his.
To recapture some of the view, he built a 2,500-square-foot, glass- and steel-enclosed deck off of his living room. Then he built a new master suite, formal dining room and office. “I designed most of it myself,” he said of the addition, which he figures cost him about $200,000.
The house, which had been a bachelor pad, is more suitable for a family now that it has three bedrooms in 3,500 square feet. Smith, 55, is engaged to actress/comedienne Anne Bloom and has a 7-year-old son from a previous marriage.
Supermodel/actress KATHY IRELAND, who is on the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, and her husband, Dr. Greg Olson, have purchased a Montecito home for close to its $1.25-million asking price, sources say.
Ireland, who has been a cover girl on three SI swimsuit issues and has appeared in such films as “National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon,” and her husband, an emergency room doctor, grew up in Santa Barbara, where they were living before the house purchase.
The home was originally a farmhouse, built more than 100 years ago. It has five bedrooms and is on two acres with ocean views and a pond. The home is on the same street as estates owned by actor Michael Douglas and singer Kenny Loggins.

TV producer-writer DAVID KELLEY, who married actress Michelle Pfeiffer last November, has put his Hollywood Hills house on the market at $1.45 million.
Kelley, a former attorney who won several Emmys for producing “L.A. Law” before he created and wrote the popular CBS series “Picket Fences,” and Pfeiffer are living in Pfeiffer’s Westside home with their daughter, Claudia Rose, 1. The child, adopted by Pfeiffer months before wedding Kelley, was christened and given her new father’s last name during the nuptials.
“They don’t need two houses,” a source said of the family.
Kelley’s house is a contemporary with city, mountain and ocean views; four fireplaces; an entertainment room, a gym with a sauna; maid’s quarters, and a lap pool. The home is listed with Don Robinson of Prudential Rodeo Realty in Beverly Hills.
CHRIS ROBINSON, who stars as Jack Hamilton in the CBS daytime series “The Bold and the Beautiful,” and his wife, Lesleigh, have purchased a five-bedroom home on an acre in Santa Clarita for $600,000.
The couple, who have five young sons, also plan to spend $300,000 expanding their Sedona, Ariz., home from 3,200 to 4,800 square feet. The Robinsons own art galleries in Santa Clarita, Sedona and Key West.
Robinson’s son, Christopher Lance, 22, will portray the late actor Montgomery Clift as a young man in the upcoming Stillwater film “Monty.” Robinson, who played Dr. Rick Webber on “General Hospital” for eight years, will play the older Clift, who died at age 45 in 1966.
IVANA TRUMP has purchased a villa in Palm Beach, Fla., for $4.4 million, sources say. Built in 1921, the 18,000-square-foot retreat has five bedrooms, a guest house, breakfast room, five fireplaces and a tunnel leading from the house to the ocean across the street.
The home, designed by the late architect Addison Mizner as his private residence, recently won architectural awards for work restoring the Mizner style, with its hand-painted cypress ceilings, dramatic Moorish archways and original Spanish tile.
The Mediterranean-style villa is a few streets north of the estate known as Mar-a-Lago, which is owned by Donald Trump. The Trumps were divorced in 1990, after 13 years of marriage.
