BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Bo Stays Hot With 400-Foot Home Run

It couldn’t be happening, but there it was, right before their very eyes.

Bo Jackson, brought to the Angels to be a part-time player and big-time gate attraction, suddenly is creating havoc with their plans.

Jackson not only has earned a job on the Angels’ opening-day roster with his spring-training performance, but he has forced the Angels to at least consider the prospect of putting him in the everyday lineup.

Jackson continued his magnificent spring Sunday by hitting a 400-foot homer over the right-field wall in the Angels’ 18-5 loss to the Colorado Rockies. If Jackson keeps it up, Angel Manager Buck Rodgers may have no choice but to make him a regular.

“It still is going to be very difficult,” Rodgers said, “but I sure wouldn’t bet against him.”

Jackson, who started in left field Sunday, is batting .391 this spring with a .727 slugging percentage. He leads the team with two homers and 16 total bases, and is second with seven runs batted in.

While Jackson continues to thrive, his competition continues to struggle. Designated hitter Chili Davis, expected to return today after being sidelined because of a groin pull, is batting .133. And first baseman J.T. Snow is batting .192.

It may be spring training, but the Angels’ pitching woes and nine-game losing streak have started to become a bit humbling. The Angel pitching staff yielded a spring-high 26 hits Sunday, including nine for extra bases. Its earned-run average soared to 9.85, worst in the Cactus League.

John Farrell probably pitched himself out of the Angels’ plans Sunday, yielding five hits and four earned runs in two innings, raising his ERA to 15.63. “I’m certainly concerned about John Farrell,” Rodgers said. “He can’t have any more bad ones, that’s for sure.”.
