Carter Hawley Posts Loss: Carter Hawley Hale Stores, operator of the Broadway department store chain, reported a net loss of $95.9 million for the 52-week period ended Jan. 19. Non-recurring charges--including the costs of voluntary work force reductions and earthquake damage--accounted for $45 million of the loss. The Los Angeles-based retailer had earnings of $1.2 billion for the same period a year ago, but the 1992 profit stemmed partly from debt reductions and asset adjustments relating to the company’s emergence in October, 1992, from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
