Micom Signs Deal With Mexican Electronics Distributor

Micom Communications Inc., a Simi Valley producer of corporate communications systems, hopes to gain important benefits from the North American Free Trade Agreement, thanks to a deal just signed with Mexico’s largest distributor of electronic products.

The arrangement with Mexico City-based MPS should increase Micom’s revenues in that country by well over $1 million this year alone, according to Micom spokesman Richard Borden.

He said MPS, which sells its computer-related products through 6,000 dealers throughout Mexico, will become Micom’s chief distributor in that country, although the Ventura County firm will continue to do business through other Mexican sales agencies as well.

Micom’s president, Gil Cabral, said: “With the recent passing of NAFTA and other Latin American free trade agreements, we see the Mexican market positioned for high growth.”

In the little more than three years since its networking systems were introduced, the Simi Valley firm has sold more than 35,000 units of the devices, called NetRunner and Marathon, Borden reported.

The systems are designed to save customers money by sending voice, fax and data-processing communications over a single telephone line.

Micom has 375 employees worldwide, 300 of them at its plant on Los Angeles Avenue. The company expects to increase its payroll by 10% this year, mainly in marketing and product development, Borden said.

Micom is a subsidiary of MB Communications Inc. of Lawrence, Pa.
