World IN BRIEF : COLOMBIA : Ruling Party Retains Control of Congress

President Cesar Gaviria’s Liberal Party retained control of Congress after legislative elections that also set the stage for a presidential vote in May. Economist Ernesto Samper was chosen to be the Liberal Party’s presidential candidate. His main opponent will be Andres Pastrana, the son of a former president who represents the Conservative Party and a coalition of smaller parties.
