Strike Threatens Production at GM Assembly Plants: Negotiators for General Motors Corp. and unionized workers at two brake plants resumed contract talks, seeking to end a strike that could soon shut down at least two GM assembly plants. Three thousand members of United Auto Workers Local 696 in Dayton, Ohio, walked off the job Monday after negotiators failed to agree on a new three-year contract. Joe Hasenjager, president of the local, has said the issues separating the two sides include job security and subcontracting. GM officials say production at the company’s Saturn plant in Spring Hill, Tenn., and its truck plant in Janesville, Wis., will have to stop if the strike is not resolved by today.
