REGION : District to Help Cities Pay for Lifeguards
The Beach Cities Health District has pledged to help three South Bay cities keep lifeguards on area beaches.
The district’s board of directors agreed to offer financial help to Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach at a special meeting Monday. No amount was set.
The three cities are among seven coastal communities under pressure from the County Board of Supervisors to contribute more money to pay for lifeguards and beach grooming. The county had threatened to stop funding the lifeguards June 30.
The health district offered to help because of the importance of lifeguards to the health of district residents, administrative officer Peggy Trobaugh said.
“It was made clear that there was no way we could pay for all the funding for the lifeguards,” Trobaugh said, and the offer is just for one year.
The three cities will work together to determine how they can best use the health district’s offer, officials said.
Harbor Director Ray Koke of Redondo Beach said the cities also may discuss forming their own district to provide combined lifeguard services.
