Share

Computer maker Advanced Logic Research Inc. saw its shares rise 16% Wednesday after the company announced late Tuesday that it had won an important computer patent.

ALR shares rose $1 to close at $7.125 on Nasdaq Wednesday. David Kirkey, vice president of worldwide marketing, said the company believes it has an important patent for upgrading a personal computer’s obsolete microprocessor, or main computing brain, to a faster component.

ALR launched its upgradeable computers in 1989 and has reaped additional sales because the technology lets computer users run the latest software programs.

Safi Qureshey, chief executive of AST Research Inc. in Irvine, said he believed AST had its own resources and patents to protect itself in case ALR tried to enforce the patent against his company.
