Los Alamitos : Park Accessibility Improvement Sought
City officials are seeking the county’s help to improve several neighborhood parks and make them more accessible to disabled residents.
The council decided last week to make the request to Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder, who informed city officials earlier this month that funds are available for park projects within her district, which includes Los Alamitos.
City officials are hoping to install new lights on the soccer and softball fields at a 12-acre area at McAuliffe Middle School on Cerritos and Bloomfield avenues, according to Recreation and Community Services Director Mark A. Wagner.
Improvements at McAuliffe also would include installing new grass and sprinklers. The improvements at the school would total about $548,000, Wagner said.
In addition, Wagner said, the city is requesting money to replace old playground equipment and install new sprinklers at Labourdette, Sterns, Roberts, Soroptomists and Stansbury parks, which were built in the 1970s.
The total cost to renovate the five parks is estimated at $132,000, Wagner said. The renovations include design changes to allow access for disabled people.
“Without the county support, the projects would not be possible,” Wagner said, adding that the city has budgeted $55,000 for park improvements in the 1993-94 fiscal year.
