BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Carter Breaks Right Thumb, Expected to Be Out a Month
Joe Carter of the Toronto Blue Jays is expected to be sidelined for at least a month because of a broken right thumb, the result of being struck by a pitch from Scott Erickson of the Minnesota Twins during a 12-9 victory Wednesday at Dunedin, Fla.
Carter, whose three-run homer against Mitch Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies last fall in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 6 gave the Blue Jays their second consecutive World Series championship, was not believed to be seriously injured at first. The break was discovered during postgame X-rays.
