WANTED MAN: Authorities trying to prosecute an Encino attorney on murder charges in connection with deliberate traffic accidents got a big break: Houston police nabbed a man sought as the suspected “capper,” the long-sought link between the attorney and ring members who positioned their cars to be hit by trucks on the Golden State Freeway for insurance payments (B1).

BAD BREAKS: Valley business owners have had a run of bad luck lately. First the quake, and now a rash of armed robberies--more than half of them aimed at dry cleaners (B1). . . . Still, it’s not all that unusual for criminals to target a specific type of store. In past years, serial arsonists have struck at Valley nail salons and barbershops.

SMALL BUT STRONG: Well known for its large Christian population, the Antelope Valley is also home to an active Jewish community. Temple Beth Knesset Bamidbar, founded 43 years ago in Lancaster, may draw far fewer people than other places of worship, but for many Jews it is the center of the area’s religious life (B1). . . . “If you’re Jewish, it’s the only game in town,” said one member.
