Construction work done long ago may have caused a rupture in a natural gas pipeline and led to an explosion that ignited into a fireball and leveled eight apartment buildings, federal investigators said Saturday.

The officials said they believe an asphalt plant now at the site of Thursday’s blast was built after the steel pipeline was installed. They said work with heavy equipment such as backhoes could have gouged the line.
